Summary:
Dometic Marine's facility in Pompano Beach, FL manufactures heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems for sport fishing, pleasure boats, and commercial markets.
The mechanical /systems design engineer is the technical owner responsible for designing, developing and improving a wide variety of climate control products for the Marine industry, including self-contained heat pump units, chiller systems, custom refrigeration and ice-making equipment. This role is focused primarily on the mechanical and thermodynamic components for these systems - specifically the design, development and continuous improvement of the hardware as well as seamless integration of the components into the systems and the systems into the customer environment.
Requirements
Main responsibilities:
Product focus:
- Mechanical & systems hardware design, development & improvement
- Systems integration (specifically mechanical components into physical systems and those systems into customer applications
- Product design & development tasks
- Prepare product design documentation for new & existing components & assemblies, including engineering specifications, schematics, drawings, test plans & reports, etc.
- Product design including component selection & sizing, layout, & optimizing performance of aforementioned products in accordance with Dometic / ISO9001 requirements / procedures.
- Technical owner of the full development cycle, from development - requirements analysis, concept design & design verification, through launch - industrialization, validation, & production start-up, as well as post-launch product improvement activities
- Ensure compliance to relevant industry & governmental regulations / specifications
- Cross-functional team activities
- Provide technical direction and leadership as part of a cross-functional product development team, led by program management, that includes manufacturing, purchasing/supply chain, sales, quality, etc.
- As appropriate, lead / coordinate / support management of offsite resources - e.g software development team, test labs, etc. required as part of the product development process
- As appropriate, lead / coordinate / support project management tasks such as: Technical design reviews, BOM management, Make/buy analyses, product cost modeling, development schedules and project reporting
- Oversee validation tests, including reliability (e.g. HALT/HASS), functional, and regulatory (safety) testing - creating all required test plans, and writing / reviewing / approving reports as appropriate
- Represent Dometic Marine in customer / supplier interactions, including troubleshooting, problem solving, line audits, trade shows, presentations, etc. as required
- Provide support as needed to the manufacturing, quality and technical service teams with respect to issue resolution & quality / warranty improvement
Qualifications and experience:
We believe that the ideal candidate has the following qualifications and experiences:
- University or Technical Institute qualifications in Mechanical, Mechatronics or related Engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of industry or relevant product design experience preferred
- A/C / HVACR product development experience, ideally related to automotive, boating and/or transportation industry including knowledge of "System V" approach is preferred
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards (e.g. SAE, ASTM, ABYC, ASHRAE, ISO, NMEA, etc.)
- Proficiency / familiarity with product design, including CAD systems, GD&T, etc. desired
- Familiarity with relevant electrical systems, including controls & basic electrical wiring design is preferred (to ease interface with electrical / electronic engineers & provide basic support to the manufacturing team)
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as CFD, FEA, 1D simulations / thermodynamic modeling (e.g. KULI, GT Suite, etc.
- Familiarity with relevant manufacturing processes and fabrication capabilities, preferably with ability to audit and improve such processes
- Understanding of hardware/software interface issues particularly relating to the control of mechanical hardware systems
- Familiarity with ERP systems to control engineering Bill of Materials
- Basic knowledge of software programming & communication protocols (CAN, etc.) to ease interface with electrical / electronic engineers
- Familiarity with HVAC test equipment - System & component calorimeters, psychrometric rooms, shaker tables, anechoic rooms for NVH testing, etc.
- Use of quality & engineering tools / methodologies (e.g. PDCA, DFMA, DFMEA, DVP&R, DFSS, etc.) in support of the development process and in accordance with Industry standards & expectations
- Familiarity with safety regulations (UL, CSA, CE and other regulatory requirements)
