An Automotive General Manager (GM) oversees the daily operations of an auto dealership or service center, ensuring that all departments (sales, finance, service, and parts) are running smoothly and meeting sales, profitability, and customer satisfaction targets. This role requires a strong understanding of the automotive industry, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to manage various teams to create a positive customer experience and drive revenue. This role is critical in driving the dealership's success, ensuring financial growth, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy
Develop and implement effective sales, marketing, and operational strategies to maximize profitability.
Set clear goals for all departments and ensure alignment with the company’s vision and objectives.
Lead, motivate, and mentor department managers and staff to achieve performance targets and deliver a high standard of customer service.
Financial Management
Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting for the dealership.
Monitor financial performance, including sales, expenses, and profitability, to ensure targets are met.
Identify and address areas of improvement in cost control and revenue generation.
Sales and Marketing
Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to develop strategies for new and used vehicle sales, service promotions, and parts sales.
Stay updated on market trends, competitor actions, and customer preferences to adjust sales strategies as needed.
Drive customer acquisition and retention initiatives, including marketing campaigns, community involvement, and digital engagement.
Customer Experience
Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction by fostering a customer-focused culture.
Handle escalated customer service issues, ensuring swift resolution.
Monitor customer feedback, reviews, and surveys to improve service quality and address issues proactively.
Operational Efficiency
Oversee daily dealership operations, including staffing, inventory management, and scheduling.
Ensure that all departments follow industry regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
Collaborate with service and parts departments to maintain efficient workflow and minimize delays in vehicle service and repairs.
Inventory and Vendor Relations
Manage relationships with manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers to maintain an optimal inventory of vehicles and parts.
Oversee inventory control processes, including vehicle ordering, receiving, and storage.
Monitor aging inventory and develop strategies for timely clearance.
Human Resources and Development
Recruit, hire, and train staff across departments, fostering a positive work environment.
Conduct performance evaluations, providing feedback, coaching, and development opportunities.
Develop and implement policies for staff retention, development, and performance improvement.
Qualifications
Experience: At least 5–10 years of experience in an automotive dealership, with a minimum of 3 years in a managerial role.
Skills: Leadership, strategic planning, financial acumen, communication, customer service, negotiation, and organizational skills.
Valid driver’s license and complete a pre-employment drug screen.
