POSITION TITLE: ELL DIVISION LITERACY COACH (GRANT FUNDED AND DEPENDENT ON AVAILABLE FUNDS)
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
In collaboration with the English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist and Coordinator of English Instruction, this position is responsible for supporting the district's ELL program initiatives. This position coaches teachers, models lessons, models co-teaching lessons, collaboratively plans with teachers, provides non-evaluative feedback to teachers, conducts professional development, and collaborates with administrators, as well as provides guidance and expertise in the best practices for successful language acquisition, specifically in the four language domain areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or skills associated with:
- Exhibit theoretical and research-based knowledge of language acquisition and English Language Development Standards.
- Coordinate and implement current research-based practices in the area of second language acquisition and literacy.
- Coach teachers to apply most effective teaching tools, skills and attitudes to increase student engagement to support a standards-based learning environment for ELLs to increase academic achievement across content areas.
- Provide assistance with individualized program materials to improve the instruction of ELLs
- Work with teachers and administrators to develop and use appropriate ELL literacy strategies, implementation plans, and assessment tools.
- Use current technology for instructional management needs.
- Observe teachers, provide feedback, and identify next steps to improve instruction in the area of English language development for the purpose of instructional support, not evaluation
- Support staff, administration, parents, and students, as the leader with expertise in providing quality educational literacy support for multilingual learners.
- Analyze data, identify trends, and support teachers to adjust instruction based on data
- Participate in the training, coaching, and developing/mentoring new ELL staff.
- Provide professional development for teachers through training sessions, observations, modeling, and coaching.
- Attend state and district level meetings as needed.
- Collaborate with ELL district leaders and school leaders to enhance data systems that drive targeted intervention support for English language learners.
- Analyze school and district ELL student data (SOL, ACCESS for ELLs, etc.) with teachers to inform instructional decisions.
- Meet regularly with the Coordinator of English and ELL Specialist regarding classroom practices and provide ongoing feedback.
- Participate in on-going professional development by attending workshops, lectures, and institutes on specific subjects to enhance job performance such as knowledge in language acquisition, literacy development, coaching skills, and adult learning theory.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding ELL education and students;
- Experience working in diverse settings;
- Deep knowledge of researched based reading, writing and literacy development, and successful implementation in a classroom environment;
- Must be able to provide school-level leadership in regards to curriculum, resources, and best practices to support classroom instruction with a deep understanding of the progression of the knowledge, skills, and processes of ELD standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning;
- Proven ability to analyze data at the student, class, and school levels to assist teachers with developing evidence-based instruction for whole and small group tailored to student need and ultimately increase academic performance;
- Must have extensive experience with innovative teaching techniques, instructional materials, and current trends in the area of ELL instruction;
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents and community.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or University
- Hold a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in ESOL
- Minimum five years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching ELL students (K-12)
- Master's degree preferred
- Spanish as a native/second language preferred
EQUIPMENT
- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and telephone.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
