We are seeking a Machinery Engineering Manager in our Houston TX or Allentown, PA global headquarters.
The Americas Operations Machinery Engineering Manager is responsible for all aspects of managing machinery systems for operating plants in North America, including troubleshooting, optimization, and maintenance strategies.
The Machinery Engineering Manager reports functionally to the Americas Operations Technical Director and has direct accountability to the sub-region General Managers and the Americas Executive Director of Operations.
The incumbent maintains a diverse team with deep expertise in machinery systems for all types of plants supported. The machinery team is typically the first level of support for any machinery issue in our plants. The Machinery Engineering Manager must have excellent communication and leadership skills and the ability to develop technical expertise within his team. This role will be best served out of our HQ location in Allentown, Pennsylvania or Houston, Texas but has flexibility for other locations.
The Machinery Engineering Manager works across multiple sub-regions and has responsibility over a number of diverse technologies including Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), Partial Oxidization (POX), Power Generation, Air Separation (ASU), Generated Gases (Gen Gas), Liquid Hydrogen, Liquid Helium, Liquid CO2, and Ammonia. The machinery includes Centrifugal, Reciprocating and Screw Compressors, Steam Turbines, Gas Turbines, Expanders, Blowers, Gearboxes, Cooling towers, Fin-Fans and all types of pumps including cryogenic pumps.
Primary job responsibilities:
- Responsible for direct supervision of (12) Machinery Engineers and (3) Machinery Specialists.
- Administer EH&S compliance to ensure the protection of personnel, the community, and the environment through proper application of regulatory codes and internal APCI standards
- Effectively coordinate engineering resources while driving consistency within the organization.
- Initiate and implement reliability and/or efficiency improvement initiatives and best practices across fleet.
- Talent development so that Operations business needs are met over the long term. This includes capability mapping, identification of capability gaps, succession planning, and management of talent action plans. Develop clear roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities for direct and indirect reports.
- Drive collaboration and cooperation between the Machinery teams in Operations, Engineering (PDO), Global Operations Excellence, and the COE.
- Maintain strong and effective working relationships with counterparts in Asia and EMEA to share lessons learned and common issues.
- Flex resources to support high regional workloads, to further develop resources, and for knowledge retention.
- Lead or participate in team efforts to complete major projects within budget and on schedule.
- Maintain effective relationships with suppliers and customers (both internal and external).
- Work with Procurement on supplier qualification for equipment, parts, and services.
Requirements / Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering.
- 15+ years of experience in machinery design, application, engineering, operation, and maintenance. Preferably with 10+ years in Operations and/or field support.
- 10+ years managing engineering teams.
- Knowledge of Air Products Product Lines is beneficial (Air Separation Units, Process Gases, Standard Plants, Gasification)
- Well versed in machinery vibration diagnostics skills and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong organizational, planning, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential.
- Well versed in complex Root Cause Analysis.
- A proven influential leader. Ability to work in a cross-functional organization with corporate and regional teams.
- Approximately 30%-40% travel is required.
