South Dakota Mines is seeking a Senior Composites Engineer. The Senior Composites Engineer must have demonstrated ability to conduct successful engineering/scientific research in polymer and polymer composite processing, including design and implementation of innovative process technologies, and materials structure and property characterization and testing. Knowledge and hands on experience with polymer processing equipment is required and experience with characterization methods (rheological, thermal, microscopic, spectroscopic, etc.) is preferred. Since this position also includes overseeing a machine shop operation involved in custom design and fabrication of component, equipment and machinery, knowledge of machining operations (CNC, Solidworks, etc.) would be a significant asset. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, be an intellectually creative team player, and possess willingness to interact effectively with corporate and government clients. Additionally, the selected candidate must be capable and motivated to work on multiple projects, including significant leadership and supervisory responsibilities, in a range of established and developing research areas and have the ability to collaborate on writing research proposals. Good written and presentation skills are required.
A MS or a PhD degree in Materials engineering/science, polymer engineering/science, mechanical engineering or chemical engineering, or a related discipline is required, preferably with significant post-graduation R&D experience. Alternatively, a BS degree with at least 8 years of successful R&D experience in polymer/composites engineering and/or science in an industrial or institutional environment

The Composites and Polymer Engineering Laboratory conducts scientific and engineering research on advanced materials for a range of applications, through funding from corporate, state and federal awards/contracts.
