Position: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ARCHITECT
Experience: 5+ years of experience.
Minimum Education: BS or equivalent in Electrical Engineering
Compensation Range: $120k - $180k depending upon education, skills, and experience.
The Electrical Engineering (EE) Team at nLIGHT DEFENSE Systems develops and integrates a large range of devices to enable high-speed control of laser and electro-optical components for high energy laser weapon systems. Our EE Team addresses challenging DoD requirements including high power battery and high-power AC-DC conversion solutions, high efficiency and high-power DC-DC power conversion, complex multi-function MIL-STD cabling solutions, high-speed data fiber MIL-STD cabling solutions, PCB design/development/test, challenging trouble-shooting, and tight packaging challenges. The EE Team members are dynamic problem solvers that typically have to work around numerous optical and mechanical constraints, making the job particularly challenging and interesting. We are seeking Staff-Level to Sr-Level Electrical Engineers with a passion for delivery of cutting-edge High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon systems as part of a dynamic and hard-working team. In particular, we are seeking engineers that are motivated to learn and grow our baseline electrical system architecture.

Job Description: Architect, design, develop, test, and implement rugged power and data distribution solutions for cutting-edge laser and electro-optical systems. Review higher level requirements and translate into designs leveraging COTS solutions or existing libraries of custom solutions. Procure hardware solutions by working with supplier base. Test and debug hardware to trace root causes of failures. Employ safe electrical and power practices at all times. Document and track progress against requirements. Prepare test reports documenting investigation of new devices. Develop templates for engineers and technicians to document quality assessments of cables and devices.
Responsibilities:
Work with EE Team and ECAD tools (Altium Harness) to develop Electrical System Architectures balancing data, power, thermal and mechanical constraints while leveraging our library of custom components and COTS components.
Work with EE Team to specify, design, procure/build, and test rugged MIL-STD power distribution solutions.
Work with EE Team to specify, design, procure/build, and test rugged MIL-STD data and power cabling solutions.
Work with mechanical and electro-optical engineers on design of tightly packaged integration solutions for cabling, power, and cooling.
Troubleshoot integrated solutions from the component to system level. Utilize test hardware in a safe manner to trace problems and identify root cause.
Develop, implement, and test bonding and grounding specifications and solutions.
Develop, implement, and test EMI mitigation solutions.
Integrate electronic solutions working with electro-optical, electro-mechanical, firmware, and software Teams.

Strong troubleshooting experience with hardware.
Experience with aerospace and military connectors (MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-5015, etc.) and IPC and/or MIL-STD cable design and assembly practices.
Experience with EMI mitigation practices (MIL-STD-461) for electrical systems. Bonding, grounding, and shielding system design and test (MIL-HDBK-1857).
Supplier management experience.
Strong written communication skills.
Experience with MS Office 365 tools.
Additional Supporting Desired Experience / Capability:
Experience in PCB Design and Test.
Software experience in C, C++, C#, or Python.
Compliance testing and certification for international safety standards, EMC, and environmental regulations (UL, CE, IEC, RoHS, etc).
Experience with Fiber Optic cable design for data transmission (MTP connectors and OM3/OM4 fiber).
