The City of Carpinteria is accepting applications for a Part-time Maintenance Worker (Temporary Position).Please Note: This temporary assignment will end on or before June 30, 2025.Deadline for First Review of Applications: August 20, 2024Interview Date: August 28, 2024.The position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance of streets, parks, beaches, right of ways, facilities and other public works areas; and provide technical support to the Public Works and Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities divisions.Receives immediate supervision from the Public Works Supervisor or the Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Supervisor, or assigned supervisor and may receive technical and functional supervision from higher level maintenance positions.To view the full job description, ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES Include, but are not limited to the following:Perform minor maintenance on equipment, oil and clean equipment as necessary.Oversee work being performed by outside contractors, order supplies for contractors.Respond to inquiries from the general public as appropriate.Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.When assigned to the Public Works Department:Perform maintenance of streets, parking lots, rights-of-way, and drainage. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.Provide customer service.Prepare daily reports of maintenance activities; assist in preparing inventory and ordering of supplies and tools.Perform patching, overlaying, chuck hole and crack sealing repair of asphalt.Maintain assigned right of way areas in the City; prune, fertilize, weed, trim, mow right of way areas; edge lawns as necessary.Pick up and haul trash found in assigned areas; use blowers to clean areas; clean restrooms as necessary.Trim trees, bushes and plants; plant new foliage as necessary.Maintain and repair sprinklers; water assigned areas by hand and sprinklers. Perform minor maintenance on equipment; oil and lube equipment; clean equipment as necessary.When assigned to the Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Department:Conduct routine inspections of parks, beach and other areas of responsibility, including equipment and related facilities for safety, function, appearance, and vandalism.Perform maintenance, repair, landscaping and horticultural duties in City parks, grounds and related areas and facilities.Clean and clear park and beach grounds, structures and playing fields of debris and hazardous conditions; setup park for special events.Install, repair and inspect playground and park equipment, fences and related park and public facilities.Maintain and repair sprinklers and irrigation controllers; water assigned areas by hand sprinklers.Operate and maintain utility tractors, power tools, trucks, and trailers.Make minor adjustments on service equipment; oil, lube and clean tools and equipment and maintain in working order.Perform general painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and cement work as needed.Nature Park and trail maintenance, as well as installation sign repair.Maintain records of daily activities and inspection records; assist in preparing inventory and ordering of supplies and tools.Communicate with supervisors on a daily basis.Clean and maintain City owned and operated public restroom facilities as assigned.Plant and maintain trees, shrubs and plants, clear sites of weeds.Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks in the construction and repair of park and community facilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation/Certification:Any combination of experience or training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be:Graduate from accredited high school or GED; equivalent of the twelfth grade supplemented by one year of experience in construction or general maintenance work to provide the ability to perform required skilled and semi-skilled duties of position. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required. License/Certificate:All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.A valid appropriate California driver's license may be required.Maintain a satisfactory driving recordPossession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate valid Hazardous Materials Emergency Responder Certification.Certification or ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification. When assigned to Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities a Pool Operator certification, and Playground Inspection certification.Required Knowledge:Occupational hazards and standard safety practices and policies to safely perform heavy manual labor.Basic principles and practices of repair and maintenance procedures and practices.Common tools and materials used in assigned area of responsibility.Depending on assignment:Park irrigation management, including irrigation system repair and tuning, irrigation control program and water use management; basic mechanical and sanitation requirements of a public swimming pool; basic methods and techniques of landscaping and grounds keeping with working knowledge of operation and maintenance of landscape and maintenance equipment, including tractors, backhoes, mowers, sprayers, hammers and power tools.City street system repair and maintenance.Standard carpentry and construction skills, including plumbing, electrical, painting, masonry and mechanical work.Basic methods and techniques of herbicide and pesticide applications.Methods and practices involved in the repair, maintenance and upkeep of areas of assignment.Safe work practices and policies.Skills/Abilities:Maintain physical condition appropriate to performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.Perform construction, maintenance and repair of parks and related facilities and equipment and other assigned areas.Perform carpentry, mechanical and landscape maintenance; read and understand schematic diagrams, if necessary.Work with the variety of tools related to park and facilities maintenance and ability to learn to operate a variety of maintenance equipment.Operate motorized equipment such as tractors, backhoes, mowers and trucks. Depending on assignment, operate specialized job related equipment including hydraulic jackhammers and tampers.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Prioritize work schedule.Learn pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Communicate clearly and concisely.
