DescriptionThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking a student assistant to assist in producing an electronic record from hundreds of as-builts from the past 10+ years, in a learning capacity, under the direct guidance of a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Supervisor). The incumbent prepares plans, specifications, and the engineer's estimate for all items related to delivering PS&E (Plans, Specifications, and Estimates) in all types of electrical projects, including research. The Student Assistant will also conduct field reviews of proposed work.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentThis is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Additional Work ScheduleStudent Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).Minimum QualificationsMust maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Must possess the ability to:Learn procedures and methods.Work well with others in a team environment.Satisfactorily carryout assignments; do neat and accurate work.Follow instructions completely.Preferred QualificationsFamiliarity with electrical design and/or familiarly with design software. Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct guidance of a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer, and in a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in producing an electronic record of electrical assets in GIS (Environmental Geographic Information System), in cooperation with our Traffic Operations' GIS Mapping unit in Sacramento.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will attempt to electronically document new assets designed by the various Electrical Design Units at the RTL ( Register transfer level) stage.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will develop a reliable estimate software tool using existing estimating worksheets and pricing data. Ensure the tool allows Electrical Design units to update pricing based on new data and ongoing construction projects.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will prepare plans, specifications, and the engineer's estimate for all electrical items related to delivering PS&E in various electrical projects, including conducting the necessary research.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will conduct field reviews of proposed work and existing installations, documenting findings and recommending necessary actions.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will support the preparation of technical reports and other project-related documentation.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will participate in meetings, representing the Department as required.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will perform field trips and data collection to support project development.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist with other duties as needed, contributing to the overall success of the office and field support operations.Physical RequirementsSit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office or in a field environment.Application InstructionsPlease complete all fields of the employment application.
