SCHEDULE
35-hour work week, Monday through Friday
LOCATION
Flexible. Executive team members are expected to attend in-person team meetings one week each month, typically at the New York City headquarters. Additionally, participation is expected during our annual, weeklong all-staff summit.
COMPENSATION
$250,000 - $350,000 (this range is for the NYC area and will be adjusted for other localities; additionally, factors like skills and experience will be considered).

POSITION SUMMARY
Candid aims to provide the most comprehensive, robust, and timely data available to enable nonprofits and philanthropy to deliver on their missions more efficiently, effectively, and equitably. The Chief Data Officer (CDO) will fill a new executive position and drive the vision, strategy, and execution of Candid's growing role as the leading provider of data and analytics for the social sector, amidst a rapidly changing landscape. The CDOs goal will be to make the best data as broadly accessible as possible, while maintaining financial sustainability.
Reporting to the CEO, and a key member of the executive team, the CDO will serve as the overall lead for Candid's role as a data provider and data thought leader. The CDO must be an extremely effective communicator, working as a trusted advisor to the board, executive team, customers, and other stakeholders on issues related to data and artificial intelligence (AI).
This is an ideal opportunity for a strategic, collaborative, empathetic, and forward-thinking data analytics leader to apply their skills, experience, and expertise to harness data for all who seek to do good.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Define Candid's long-term vision and strategy to produce and distribute best-in-class data and analytics related to nonprofit work and philanthropic giving.
- Serve as a strong external presence and thought leader to position Candid as a preeminent organization on data and AI for good. Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, peers, and customers.
- Build and lead a strong team (currently 39 and growing) equipped to position Candid as the leading provider of data and analytics for the social sector. Support the recruitment and hiring of high-performing and diverse talent.
- Stay abreast of industry and technology trends and best practices related to open data, data governance, data privacy, machine learning, and LLMs and their implications for Candid's work.
- Clearly communicate nuances about data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Drive ongoing innovation in data acquisition/enhancement, data quality, new applications/use cases, analytics to derive key insights and recommendations, and leverage technology advances. Identify opportunities to provide valued and differentiated data and insights.
- Assess and improve data and analytics infrastructure, data quality, data architecture, and internal processes.
- Provide oversight and maintain direct responsibility for data architecture, data quality, data sourcing and distribution, and data governance.
- Derive essential insights for the social sector through analytics and research.
- Ensure data privacy, data governance, ethical use of data, and compliance with regulations.
- As a member of the Executive Team, participate in cross-divisional initiatives and decision-making, including strategic planning, leadership development, change management, and fiscal oversight.
- Stewardship of Candid's culture and values with an eye towards organizational effectiveness, goal setting, and impact.
- Foster a data-driven culture at Candid, providing leaders with the data and insights that support decision-making, strategy, performance, and measurable business outcomes.
REQUIREMENTS
- 5+ years executive-level experience in leading data related teams.
- Advanced technical skills in data architecture, data modeling, data warehousing, data management, statistical analysis, and data science. Abreast of latest industry trends and developments related to data and AI.
- Strong and persuasive public speaker. Able to synthesize complex problems and communicate results and stakeholder options concisely and cogently verbally, in public presentations, and in formal documentation.
- Well established data leader with strong external relationships among other experts in the ecosystem.
- Proven people leader with experience supporting strong and collaborative teams.
- Strong decision-maker with track record of assessing options, articulating tradeoffs, and setting clear priorities.
- Ability to attract and retain top talent in a highly competitive market.
- Experience with nonprofits, philanthropy, or social sector data preferred.
- Diligent listener and communicator; ability to synthesize input, incorporate feedback, and adapt approach working with diverse constituencies.
- Preferred knowledge of Microsoft 365, Teams, and other Office 365 applications.
- Preferred knowledge of Microsoft and MacOS operating systems.
- Linux experience a plus but not required.
- College degree strongly preferred; equivalent experience will also be considered.
- Sensitivity and respect for racial, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural differences.
